Sod Installation 101
Whether you're installing sod yourself or hiring a landscaper, it helps to know what's involved. Our premium Kentucky Bluegrass and Advantage Turf give you wear tolerance, disease resistance, great natural color, and lower water use — and a little preparation goes a long way toward a healthy new lawn.
- 1
Check & prep your soil
Apply chemicals to kill existing sod, grass, and weeds before installing new sod. Then loosen compacted soil, add organic matter and topsoil, and smooth the surface. Rototilling the ground encourages a deeper root system and proper water run-off. Good prep reduces how much water you'll need and helps roots penetrate further.
- 2
Measure & order the right amount
Use an area calculation of your yard so you order the right number of square feet — and don't over-order. Our Turf Area Calculator makes this easy. Plan to add about 15% extra to your order to cover odd-shaped areas and cuts.
- 3
Install within 48 hours
Once your sod is delivered or picked up, install it within 48 hours. Plan where you want it delivered and use wagons to move pieces around the yard as you work.
- 4
Lay & trim the sod
Have the right tools on hand — a simple knife (even a dollar-store one) works great for cutting odd-shaped pieces to fit around curbs and beds. With gloves on, you can tear most pieces by hand. Prefer not to install it yourself? Let us know — we can refer install crews.
- 5
Water deeply right away
Water new sod thoroughly to settle it and start root growth. Going forward, deep and infrequent watering (early morning) encourages deeper roots and a healthier lawn.
